Please complete the questionnaire that was mailed to you prior to your study and bring it with you to the lab when you return to the hospital for testing. SLEEP STUDY GUIDE: FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS How should I prepare for my sleep study? Please have freshly shampooed hair (no hair spray or styling products). Eat normally the day of the study. Take your normal medications unless the doctor advises otherwise. No caffeine or alcohol from noon on, no napping, do not use creams, lotions, or makeup. Bring pajamas or bed clothes preferably of cotton material (no silky gowns), toiletry items, medications, additionally you may want to bring e.g. Tylenol, Advil, Tums, etc., your own pillow if you wish, slippers and special needs items like a walker or diabetes testing equipment. Where do I go on the night of my sleep study? Arrive at the Nebraska Heart Hospital main entrance. Park in the main lot. Enter the hospital through the front entrance and someone will be there to greet you and show you to your room. What will my room look like? The rooms are nicely decorated with a regular bed, television and a private bathroom and shower. How will you test for a sleep problem? Sensors will be placed so that signals for identifying sleep, breathing, oxygen levels and limb movements will be placed in the following locations: On the scalp, legs, behind ears, finger, chin, forehead, near eyes, and around the chest and abdomen (usually belts are placed over clothing) Will I be given any medications during the study? Normally, no. However, your physician may want you to have a sleeping aide. If you routinely take a sleeping aide please bring it with you. Can I get up to use the bathroom? Yes! You will have communication with the technologist and may request to use the bathroom at any time. Will there be any pain involved? No. There is no pain however, the sensors placed on you may feel unusual at first. The sensors will not impair your ability to change positions through the night. What happens in the morning? You will awaken around 5:30-6:30am. The sensors will be removed and you may get cleaned up and dressed. You will then complete a short questionnaire, be given sleep education materials and be discharged. |
